For the First Time, More US Businesses Pay for Claude Than ChatGPT. Here Is the Service Play for Anyone Building on Anthropic Before This Moment Fully Prices In.

Anthropic just crossed a threshold that no one expected to happen this fast.
According to Ramp's May 2026 AI Index — which tracks AI spending across more than 50,000 US businesses — Anthropic reached 34.4% business adoption in April 2026. OpenAI fell to 32.3%.
That is the first time more US businesses have paid for Claude than ChatGPT.
To understand how significant that is: Anthropic's adoption was 0.03% of businesses in June 2023. It is now 34.44%. OpenAI, the company that created the category, grew business adoption by only 0.3% in the same period.
The model flip happened. The services layer has not caught up yet. That is where the opportunity is.
Why This Happened So Fast
Two things converged.
First, Claude Code. Anthropic's coding agent became the fastest-growing AI product in the market. Developers started using it daily — inside the terminal, inside their existing workflows, without needing a new interface. When developers are doing daily work in a tool, the enterprise procurement conversation changes: it stops being "should we evaluate this?" and starts being "we already use this, now budget it."
Second, OpenAI started losing ground it took for granted. Ramp's data shows OpenAI's adoption fell 2.9 percentage points in April alone. The same report notes "users have experienced frequent outages, rate limits, and increasing dissatisfaction with results."
The companies switching are not hobby users. Ramp's April 2026 index shows Anthropic at 63% adoption in the Information and Software sector versus OpenAI's 54%, and 52% versus 46% in Finance. These are professional software teams with real workflows and real switching costs — and they switched anyway.
The Services Gap
Here is what happens when 34% of businesses adopt a new platform in a compressed window: implementation quality is uneven, workflows are half-migrated, and teams are running Claude the way they ran GPT-4 instead of the way Claude actually works best.
Claude has meaningfully different strengths from GPT-4. Longer effective context. Better instruction-following in agentic settings. Different behavior on tool use and multi-step reasoning tasks. A team that swaps the API key without adjusting their prompts, evals, and agent logic is leaving measurable performance on the table.
That gap is a service business.
The Four Engagements
The Claude Integration Audit. A two-week fixed-scope engagement that maps a team's existing AI workflows, runs side-by-side evaluations on their actual prompts and tasks, identifies where Claude outperforms their current setup, and delivers a written migration roadmap. Priced at $3,000 to $6,000. This is your entry-point offer — it creates trust, surfaces the full migration opportunity, and converts to implementation work at a high rate.
The Claude Code Rollout Package. Most engineering teams adopting Claude Code are not configuring it well. A properly written CLAUDE.md, well-scoped permissions, and workflow design for code review, test generation, and refactoring are not intuitive on first use. A two-to-three week rollout engagement that sets this up properly — including team onboarding and documentation — is worth $4,000 to $8,000 to a team of five or more engineers.
The Claude Validation Sprint. When teams switch models, their existing prompts, evals, and agent logic need to be validated against new model behavior. Package a fixed-scope 'Claude Validation Sprint' that runs their top-20 prompts, flags regressions, and delivers rewritten versions optimized for Claude's instruction-following style. Two weeks, $2,000 to $5,000.
The Optimization Retainer. After initial engagement: a monthly retainer for model governance, eval maintenance, and workflow updates as Anthropic releases new models. The Ramp data suggests this market is moving fast — Claude's adoption quadrupled in a year, and each major model release reshuffles what works. Teams that have invested in Claude-native workflows will want someone to keep them current. $1,500 to $3,000 per month.
Finding Your First Three Clients
Your pipeline is already built into the market data. Every company that shows up in Ramp's data as an Anthropic customer is a potential client. You cannot access that list directly, but you can find proxy signals.
Job boards are the fastest path. Search for 'Claude' or 'Anthropic' in job descriptions — any company hiring for Claude-specific experience is a team that has adopted the platform and wants to go deeper. These teams are actively building their internal expertise; a fractional consultant who already has it is a natural fit.
LinkedIn signal: engineers who list 'Claude Code' or 'Anthropic API' in their skills or recent posts. These are your champions inside the organizations you want to serve. Connect on the technical content, not the sales pitch.
GitHub signal: public repositories using the Anthropic SDK. These are teams already building. Reach out with specific observations about their implementation and a concrete offer to improve it.
Your first message is not 'do you want consulting.' It is: 'I noticed you are running Anthropic's API for your X workflow. There is a prompt structure change that typically improves output quality by Y in that use case. Happy to show you if useful.'
Timing
The Ramp data shows this adoption wave happened in a compressed window. Anthropic quadrupled in a year. That kind of growth means there are a lot of companies that are 60 days into using Claude — past the initial novelty, aware it could be working better, but not sure what to fix.
The services layer that should exist around 34% platform adoption does not yet exist at the scale it needs to. That window will not stay open for long.
